Digestive System – Digestion, Heartburn & Ulcers
Your digestive system is a long tube starting at your mouth and ending at your anus. Its primary goal is to break down food and extract energy and nutrients from the food you ingest. Modifications of this tube are your throat, esophagus, stomach, duodenum and intestines. When you eat, the food travels down the esophagus to your stomach where hydrochloric acid (HCL) dissolves your food. HCL is one of the most powerful acids found in nature! If it were to somehow escape your stomach, it could actually dissolve every organ in your body! Basically, you’d eat yourself alive! So what actually keeps this acid from escaping?? It is a thick layer of mucus that covers the stomach’s inner walls.
Dyspepsia & Ulcers
A common stomach condition is called chronic stomachache, nervous stomach or dyspepsia. Another very painful condition is an ulcer, which occurs when the powerful acids and digestive juices start to eat through the stomach and intestines.
Pyloric Stenosis/Heartburn/Gastritis
Inflammation of the stomach walls is called Gastritis. Pyloric stenosis is a shrinking or tightening of the pyloric valve, this valve connects the esophagus to the stomach. When food reverses course, jumps through the pyloric valve, from the stomach to the esophagus, heartburn occurs.
As early as 1921, it was discovered that spinal abnormalities could cause stomach, esophagus, duodenum, and intestinal disorders. The famous researcher R. Maigne discovered the releasing stress from the nervous system helped digestive pains and pseudo-ulcers. Clinical experience reveals chiropractic helps relieve abdominal pain, digestive problems, dyspepsia, and epigiastric distress.
Scientists surgically created an artificial vertebral subluxation in rabbits, within 22 minutes there were changes in the stomach and duodenum, changes that could make the upper gastrointestinal tract vulnerable to disease and dysfunction.
A large study involving 385 chiropractors in seven countries who collected information on 5607 patients found that many reported improvements in digestion with chiropractic care. Chiropractic care has relieved abdominal pain, stomach ulcers, gastritis, colitis, and spastic constipation.
Your chiropractor is trained to analyze your body for spinal malformations, called subluxations. Subluxations can interfere with your internal communications, irritate your nerves, and affect your digestion, assimilation, and elimination. Your digestive system to weaken, it can stop working properly and possibly be vulnerable to a multitude of diseases. Your chiropractor’s job is to ensure that the stomach and the rest of the digestive system is unobstructed to receive a healthy nerve supply. When your spine is free of subluxations, it promotes body harmony, allows your body to cope better with stress, and there is an improved resistance to disease.
If your nerves are impinged upon by subluxation, it doesn’t matter what drugs are prescribed to you, it will not relieve that pressure. Allowing your chiropractor to assess and evaluate what may be causing the problem, gives you a better chance at getting to the root cause. Spinal adjustments are often what your body needs to both heal the problem and help prevent it from happening again.
Along with spinal health, drinking water can also correct many digestive problems. People can be dehydrated and not even know it. When we age, the sense of thirst can diminish, this leads many of us to not drink enough water. Adding to the lack of water intake, many of us drink coffee, tea and juices which do not hydrate the body but can actually add to the dehydration process.
A study was done where 100 people with stomach and duodenal ulcers were accessed for spinal abnormalities. It was found that 86 had spinal abnormalities of the area that supplied the stomach with nerve fibers. It has been discovered that spinal misalignment’s produce disease by irritating the nerves that supply a variety of organs. It stands to reason then, that correcting the spinal problems will relieve stomach ulcers, gastritis, colitis and spastic constipation.
